5 Reasons Campers Are Retiring Their Old Sleeping Pads for the NorthPeak Ultralight Mattress Pro
By the North Peak Gear TeamUpdated October 20266 min read★★★★★4.7 / 5 on Trustpilot
The Mattress Pro set up at a real campsite: 10cm of air between you and the cold, hard ground.
If you have ever woken at 2am on a slowly deflating pad, one hip pressed into the freezing ground and two days of the trip still to go, you already know the problem. Most people meet camping with a bad air mattress or a thin foam pad, sleep terribly, and quietly decide they are just "not a tent person."
We hear it constantly: campers who have burned through three or four camping mattresses looking for one that stays firm all night, doesn't sound like a bag of chips, and doesn't need its own suitcase to carry. So before we show you the product card, price and guarantee, here are the five reasons the NorthPeak Ultralight Mattress Pro keeps ending that search. Read them, then decide.
Already know you want one? Get the Mattress Pro for $59.99 USD (regularly $120) with a 90-day risk-free trial.
A pad that stays firm while you sleep, not one that quits at 2am.
One camper put it best: their old pad "slowly turned into a tortilla" overnight, leaving them flat on the ground by morning. It is the most common camping-gear complaint there is, and it ruins otherwise great trips.
The Mattress Pro is built to hold its air through the night. A firmer, better-seated valve and a thicker 10cm chamber mean you settle in once and stay off the ground, instead of topping it up every few hours. It is not magic, it is just a camping mat that does the one job a sleeping mat is supposed to do. And if yours ever doesn't hold air, the 90-day trial and 24-month warranty have you covered, no argument.
2 Reason Two
Side Sleepers: Your Hip Pain Days Are Over
10cm (4 inches) of support, so your hip never touches the ground.
Side sleepers have a specific problem: thin pads let your hip and shoulder "bottom out" and press straight into the cold, hard earth. As one owner said after her first night, "my hip didn't touch the ground at all."
That is the whole point of the 10cm build. It is not just thicker for the sake of a spec sheet, it is thickness with support underneath it, so pressure points stay lifted instead of collapsing. Pair it with the built-in headrest or your own inflatable pillow and it is the closest camping sleep gets to your bed at home.
Want the short version? The Mattress Pro is $59.99 USD today (regularly $120) with a 90-day risk-free trial.
No more "bag of chips" soundtrack every time you roll over.
If you have shared a tent with a crinkly pad, you know the sound. Every turn is an announcement. It is the running joke in half the camping reviews online, and it keeps whole groups awake.
The Mattress Pro uses a softer, brushed surface that is far quieter than the loud foil-style camping sleeping pads most people start out with. It is not a claim of total silence, no air pad is, but it is the difference between waking the tent and rolling over unnoticed. For festival grounds, shared trips and light sleepers, that alone is worth the switch.
4 Reason Four
Built to Last Through Season After Season
Reinforced 40D nylon TPU that holds up to real outdoor use.
Sharp sticks, gravel tent pads and the endless pack-and-unpack cycle are what kill cheap sleeping mats. The Mattress Pro is made from a reinforced 40D nylon TPU shell chosen to take that kind of everyday outdoor abuse and keep its shape.
How confident is North Peak in it? In one of their own durability tests they drove a three-tonne vehicle across an inflated pad and it held: no puncture, no blow-out. You will never need to do that, but it is a fair demonstration of why this is gear you can stop babying and start trusting, trip after trip.
Everything you need in one piece of camping gear: firm all night, quiet, packs to water-bottle size.
Add up what you have already spent on pad after pad that let you down. Most serious campers buy three or four before they find one that works, and that can quietly run to $600 to $900 over the years.
Whether you are coming off a cheap air bed or an old foam pad, the difference is hard to unlearn. At a one-time $59.99, the Mattress Pro is built to end that cycle instead of feeding it. It packs to the size of a water bottle, weighs about 950g, and works for backpacking, kayak trips and car camping alike. It even snap-locks to a second pad if you want a double. One piece of your camping essentials kit, sorted, so you can get back to actually enjoying the outdoors.

Good Questions
Mattress Pro FAQ
What are the dimensions and weight?
Fully inflated it measures 195 x 70 x 10cm (77 x 27.5 x 4 in), so there is genuine room to sleep. It packs down to about 28 x 14cm (11 x 6 in), roughly the size of a water bottle, and weighs about 950g (2 lbs), a comfortable middle ground for backpacking and car camping alike.
How do I inflate and deflate it? Do I need a pump?
It has an integrated foot pump, so it is firm in about 2 to 3 minutes with no separate pump to carry. If you have owned a self-inflating pad before, this is similar but faster, since you are not waiting on foam to expand. You can also top it up with an electric pump, an air bag or your lungs. To pack up, open the rapid-release valve and press the air out in under two minutes. Tip from owners: many find about 80% inflation is the sweet spot for comfort rather than fully rock-hard.
Is it good for side sleepers?
Yes, that is who it is designed for. The 10cm of supported thickness is built to stop the "hip sink-through" that thin pads cause, which is why side sleepers are some of its happiest owners.
Is there a double-bed option?
Yes. Each pad has snap-lock side connectors, so you can join two or three into a double or triple sleeping surface. The Couple Bundle above is simply two pads at a saving.
How warm is it? Will R4 handle cold nights?
It carries an R value of 4.0, which suits most three-season and mild cold-weather camping by keeping your body heat off the ground. For genuinely freezing conditions we are honest with you: add a thin closed-cell foam layer underneath, the simple system many experienced campers already use. Straight talk on warmth beats an over-promise you would feel at 3am.
Is this really the best mattress for camping at this price?
We would rather you judge that from the trial than take our word for it. Against a $15 marketplace pad you are getting a proper 24-month warranty, responsive support and a 90-day money-back window. Against a $200 premium camping air mattress, owners regularly say the comfort is close for a fraction of the price. That combination is why it keeps ending people's search.
How is it different from a cheap marketplace pad?
Fair question, and a common one. You order from North Peak Gear directly, with a named support team, a 24-month warranty, a 90-day trial and free returns. If something goes wrong, there is a real person to make it right, not a dead marketplace listing. That backing is a large part of what you are paying for.
Can I use it on water as a float?
No. It is designed and sold as a camping mattress, not a flotation or life-saving device. It is not certified for water safety and must never be relied on to keep a person or animal afloat. Keep it out of deep water, rivers, surf and currents, and always use an approved personal flotation device on the water.
How long does shipping take?
Standard shipping is 5 to 7 business days and expedited is 2 to 4. You will get tracking, and our shipping guarantee refunds your shipping cost in full if the order lands outside the window you selected.

First camp last night and I had a great sleep. Inflated it and left it in the spare room for a few days and it stayed fully inflated. Definitely a great buy.

I'm a senior and I stopped tent camping because I couldn't find anything comfortable. Never felt the ground, not once. My only regret is I didn't buy the double.

Been a camper since my teens, lately using self-inflating mats. This is amazing. Originally ordered two on a whim and have now bought another four for my scouts and my own children.

As great as they claim. Bought one for sleeping in the airport, and it worked great. Bundles up small and was very comfortable. Just leave enough time to get it mailed to you.

I've got one, it's brilliant. Packs down so small too, and it's the only one out of too many airbeds that stayed inflated. Slept like a baby, definitely getting one more.

Tried mine in the snow. Upped the R rating by adding a thin closed-cell mat underneath. Was about minus 8 and comfortable. Built-in pillow worked well.

Used ours at a festival. I had surgery a week ago so my other half treated me to one of these bad boys. Three nights and yep, no complaints at all.
